China plans to launch ‘smart’ Mars probe in 2013

Bharat Chronicle: China plans to launch ‘smart’ Mars probe in 2013
China’s Chief Scientist for deep space exploration Ye Peijian announced on Wednesday that China is planning to send it’s first probe to Mars in 2013.

If launched in 2013, It will take around 3 years for the probe to reach the atmosphere of the red planet.

The existing Lunar probe will be upgraded to ‘smarter’ Mars probe for this purpose.

According to reports, the ambitious program is yet to be sanctioned Government approval but Ye is opimistic.

The Chinese space agency is designing a probe intelligent enough to detect faults and correct them by itself and navigate without relying on commands sent from Earth.

“Mars is the first choice for mankind’s interplanetary explorations as it is the closest Earth-like planet to Earth and could have life and be turned into a habitable place,” said Ye.

Meanwhile, China’s Mars explorer, Yinghuo-1, is scheduled for launch from a Russian rocket in November this year to probe the space environment and magnetic fields of Mars.
