MOSCOW- An abandoned orbiting outpost that was the centerpiece of the Soviet space program will plunge to Earth in a rain of fiery debris between noon today and 4 pm tomorrow, Soviet and US officials said.
Some flaming parts of the 90-foot-long 43-ton space station, Salyut 7, are expected to hit the Earth's service. Early indications were that the station's debris would plunge into the Pacific east of New Zealand.
The station's orbit carries it across a broad swath of the Earth, including the United States.
